Where Have I Been? A Quick Update on Otaku Sports

Hey guys,

It’s become rather apparent that Otaku Sports hasn’t exactly been the most active lately. While I knew that I wouldn’t be able to keep up my pace of writing due to entering college this past year, what I did not expect was site activity grinding to a halt, and for that I apologize.

The truth is that life has gotten pretty busy on a variety of levels and my passion for lesiure writing really hasn’t been where it was once at. I have a notes document on my phone that has ideas for 5+ articles that I would love to write but haven’t written. Maybe inspiration hasn’t struck me yet, or maybe I’m just lazy.

Some of you may be wondering what I’ve been up to lately. Believe it or not, I’ve actually done a good amount of writing recently, thanks to the Occidental College newspaper giving me a job writing a sports column. Big shout out to Ben Petteruti, who’s written the column with me and has helped me through creative drought a few times.

Aside from that, I’ve been working for the college radio station, hosting a podcast called “Woodfellas.” The show itself is a total mess logistically, but it’s an absolute blast to do regardless. I actually made a website for it, but it’s basically just devolved into an album of shenanigans with my college buddies.

Anyways, this is kind of reading like a goodbye post, but I promise that it isn’t. I’m actually planning on posting more to the site now that I’ve gotten clearance from the OXY newspaper to repost stories here. It’s kind of pointless since you can just read them on the OXY newspaper website anyways, but posting them here will be nice for me on a personal basis since this website has basically become an archive of my sports writing escapades.

Something else that I kind of want to discuss is creative burnout from writing. It’s definitely hit me a bit lately, without getting too into it I think that general mental strain from life has had an impact on that. Living an “adult life” per se just brings a lot of new factors into play that weren’t really around in high school. These aren’t really massive changes individually, but they can snowball into decently large time commitments that detract from free time that could be spent writing. I literally did not do any extracurricular activities throughout high school, but now that I actually have commitments beyond school, I think that writing in my free time has become more of an afterthought.

Now, will I write more over the summer? To be honest, I can’t answer that question. I’ll be interning for MIX 104.1’s morning show, which is kind of funny because I fully expected to return to the Sports Hub this summer, but Toucher & Rich unfortunately came to an end and the show’s producer didn’t return any of my calls, so here we are. I’ll also be working a retail job outside of that, but that’s neither here nor there. Time commitments won’t be terribly large, but I don’t want to make promises I can’t keep so I’ll give a conservative estimate of 1-2 original pieces over the summer along with a massive dump of newspaper writing.

Anyways, this post has gone on long enough, so I’ll say this: Otaku Sports as a website isn’t going away, but I am going to embrace the change that I should have admitted to making long ago, which was transforming this site from an active blog to a full-on archive of my past writing. That said, I’m excited to make some new content here and there for people to read. Thanks to those of you who have stuck around and read my work, it is very much appreciated.

All the best,

Mac Ribner
